I thought that everybody called that stuff that you buy in quarters from the sweety shop and dip your traffic-light lollies in, kayli. However, recently on a trip to Cambridge the subject came up and all I got was blank stares.
I was told it was called 'rainbow crystals'.
Where r u from and what do you call it ? (I'm in Derbyshire as regulars will know ) xx

I always called it Cayli - though I've never written the word before, and can't remember seeing it written down. So you're spelling may well be correct!

I've seen shops call it sherbert - but I know it as cayli : )
(I'm from west mids in case it's regional)
I always believed the slightly bigger, sugar sized crystally stuff (oh I'm getting technical here!) was Kayli (sp?) and that the powdery stuff was sherbert, as it's called sherbert dabs when its in that packet with a stick of liquorice.
never heard of kayli and I'm from the west midlands, sherberts lovely though!
Have you never heard of Teddy Grey's - from Dudley? They sell it - yellow and pink
I've alway's known it as sherbert:-)
Ooopsie, Im from Wales.
think i'm with boo on this one. but rainbow crystals, now thats a different thing altogether. as i recall, they were granules again, but bigger than kayli, all different colours and in the jar in the sweet shop they were in stripes but all mixed together when weighed out in the bag and had a sharp, sour taste.
My ex called it that, he was from the midlands. We never had a name for it.
I'm from Wales too and we call it sherbet! Lovely but makes your tongue sore after a while.

:o)
are we talking about the lumps of different flavoured sugar if so theyre called rainbow drops see ---- http://www.swizzels-matlow.com/Images/product_ images/Rainbow%20Drops%20-%2010p%20Bag.jpg or rainbow dust which comes either in a long straw with different colours in or small straws with one colour per straw ----- http://www.bagsofsweets.co.uk/media.php?file=2 80 or am completely off the mark?
I lived in Suffolk as a youngster, we always called that Lemonade crystals or orangeade crystals, they were the only two flavours you could get. Sherbet was a powder and was fizzy.
My mum always called in Kayli so i did until i was older where no1 knew what i meant - i usually call it sherbert or rainbow crystals. Infact which was kayli the crystals of the powdery sherbert? i have no idea! And were from Midlands!
It's called Kayli. Sherbert is the stuff like fizzy icing sugar that comes in sherbert fountains. Kayli looks like rainbows in the jar, but when you get a paper bag of it home the colour's all muddled up and spoiled. I always thought that when I was rich I'd buy a whole jar of it!
I forgot to say, I was a child in Manchester and then Ripon (Yorkshire). I wonder if it's a Northern word.
I thought Kayli came in big lumps. Seem to remember choking on one. Don't mind me, I still miss white chocolate mice...
Dear Peppy, Further to my reply yesterday, I have now found it listed under "Kali" and it is for sale on the web. Be careful when you search as "Kali" is also and Indian God so you may find it better to search for "kali crystals" Thank you for all your help Chris
I am from Stoke and I use the correct name which is kayli, as God intended.
In Lancashire Kayli was like American Cream Soda (the sweet pink sugary stuff), Rainbow crystals was the muti-coloured stuff that looked more like sugar crystals and was grittier. Kayli was more like icing sugar or the stuff found inside Sherbet Dips with the liquorice dipper! Yummy memories!
Kay-li is a Black Country/West Midlands word for the sherbet you could buy in bags by the quarter. I remember getting some from the Black Country Museum when I was a little girl.
