I am getting a blender in a bid to start eating more fruits and veg. Am I right in thinking I will be able to make the following with it: soups, smoothies/milkshakes and cocktails? Or do I need to get a smoothie maker? I don't really understand the difference! for info, I am getting this one: http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servl et/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=1000 1&langId=-1&productId=561542 Will it be ok for what I want it for? Many thanks!

I think you can makes smoothies and shakes in a blender/liquidiser, but I don't think you could do soup in a smoothie maker, so I would think that the blender would be more useful.
All-Around Smoothie

1/2 cup nonfat milk
1/2 cup fat-free plain yogurt
1/2 frozen banana, peeled and chopped
2 tablespoons powdered protein supplement
1 1/2 tablespoons flax seed
1 teaspoon honey
1/2 cup frozen strawberries
In a blender, blend the milk, yogurt, banana, protein supplement, flax seed, honey, and strawberries until smooth.

Metric:
120 ml nonfat milk
120 ml fat-free plain yogurt
0.5 frozen banana, peeled and chopped
20 g powdered protein supplement
15 g flax seed
5 ml honey
110 g frozen strawberries

Summer Smoothie

12 red seedless grapes
1/2 cup milk
1 (6 ounce) container peach yogurt
2 tablespoons white sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup ice
In a blender, mix the grapes, milk, peach yogurt, sugar, vanilla, and ice. Blend until smooth.

Metric:
69.6 g red seedless grapes
120 ml milk
168 g peach yogurt
25 g white sugar
10 ml vanilla extract
235 ml ice

Banana Fruit Smoothie

1 cup pineapple juice
3 bananas, sliced
1 tablespoon honey
2 cups ice
In a blender, combine pineapple juice, bananas, honey and ice. Blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and serve.

Metric:
235 ml pineapple juice
354 g bananas, sliced
15 ml honey
475 ml ice
smoothie makers use a heavy duty glass jug so that you can add ice to the smoothie you are blending.

The blender you have highlighted is plastic and will smash into a gazillion pieces the moment you try to blend ice in it.

try this one

ps quite what the difference is between a smoothie maker and a glass jug blender i don't know - they both blend by rotating steel blades. Sounds like marketing schpeel to me. I have a glass jug blender and i've blended ice, nuts, breadcrumbs and frogs in it.

The last one was a joke i don't really put frogs in (what's green and turns red at the flick of a switch?)

Lol! nice one Darth Vader! (PS: I'm French, so the joke is even funnier....:-P )

I'm getting the one I showed you because it's cheap (well, yeah!) , and to be honest, I don't know if I'm going to be using it much so I don't want to spend too much on it...Hopefully it should work for everything but ice then...We'll see!

The recipes sound so yummy BBW, I can't wait to try it now!

Big trip to Tesco tomorrow to buy 5 tons of fruit....:-)
no problem, but i really recommend paying the extra euros for the heavy duty (glass) one, the plastic ones last five minutes, ice or no ice

Woohoo!!! I think I just grabbed the bargain of the century! lol
Darth Vader made me doubt a bit about the quality of the one I wanted to buy, so i shopped around and found this one:

http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page .jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0996968233.1168086740@@@ @&BV_EngineID=cceiaddjldifhhgcflgceggdhhmdfjf. 0&page=Product&sku=442390&fm=5&sm=5&tm=8&tabIn dex=1

If that's not a bargain, I don't know what is!!! lol

I'm gonna have to travel half an hour in the bus to get to the only place around here that still had them, but hopefully it will be worth it. Is it very wrong to get so excited about a blender?? lol
Question Author
Update.....

I just called the store to make sure they really had them.

They don't.

Apparently, it's a glitch in the system.

I'm gutted. Think I'm gonna have a glass of wine now. :-(
oh dear. have two...
I was going to suggest Ebay but BBWCHATT beat me to it.

they are definitely cheaper there but the flip side is the (approx) 10 shipping fee.

This one will cost you just short of 27 but
a) it's shipped to your door
b) it comes with a coffee grinder! (which I am impressed with - wish mine had one!)

btw like the description - at least it's not just my opinion
"DO NOT GET CONFUSED WITH CHEAP PLASTIC BLENDERS"

Well thank you!

Another update on my quest for a blender! I've looked on Ebay as advised, and am currently bidding on a second hand Bush blender (with glass jug and ice crushing blades - just for you, Darth Vader! lol), only used a couple of times, for 12 inc postage. I'll let you know how it goes! :-)
:-)

Another update! God am I sad..lol
Just bought a new blender on ebay for 19 quid, glass jar and ice crushing blades. Now I just need to receive it! :-)
suspense is killing me
Question Author
I know, me too Darth Vader! lol ;-)

Now, off I go get one of those "life" thingies I've heard about.....
well?

did it arrive?

does it work?

(and can i finally unsubscribe to this thread? :-)
Question Author
Not yet! :-( Aaaaaaah too much suspense, isn't it?? Still waiting so i can go and stock up on fruits - and chocolate ice cream....:-)

On the bright side, it's reassuring (albeit a bit strange too...) to see that someone else is as sad as me.....lol
Question Author
I received it this morning! YAY!!! lol

I'm at work tho, so I won't be able to try it until tonight. Can't wait! :-) Gonna buy lots of fruits and yogurt after work and hopefully enjoy a nice smoothie tonight! And maybe a wee cocktail party this weekend...:-P

It looks great, very heavy glass jar, powerful motor, ice crushing and brand new!
Thanks everyone for your advice, I'm a happy bunny!

PS: Darth Vader, you can unsubscribe now!

And thus ends the wonderful saga of max's blender quest....
Max - have you gone to blender heaven? Or maybe it is eBay heaven? :) I hate to shop so my first thought is usually - I can probably find that on eBay :)
