My Dad has just been diagnosed with age- onset diabetes. Is there any xmassy food he can have? Is it possible to have "treats" as a diabetic?

Eggnog

950 ml skim milk, divided
1 (1 ounce) package instant sugar-free vanilla pudding mix
235 ml egg substitute
5 ml vanilla extract
2 g salt
0.8 g ground nutmeg
In a medium bowl combine 2 cups milk and pudding mixture; stir well until thickened. To the pudding add remaining 2 cups milk and egg substitute; mix well. Stir in vanilla extract, salt and nutmeg until well blended and coats a spoon. Refrigerate overnight.
This is a good site with lots of information. http://www.brist.plus.com/diet.htm
The thing is; don't eat foods which convert to blood sugar quickly at the beginning of a meal or as snacks and avoid sugar at all costs. There are diabetic jams, marmelades and chocolates but nobody knows if these sugar substitutes are really good for you
I am diabetic:- we are advised 'everything in moderation no need to miss out'.
It is not advisable to use so-called 'diabetic' products the sweetener in them can cause diarrhoea.
Scarlett - not sure if your Dad can have this - but it looked interesting for this time of year:

Pumpkin Pie Smoothie

1 (15 ounce) can solid pack pumpkin puree
1 (12 fluid ounce) can frozen apple juice concentrate
0.4 g ground nutmeg
2 g ground cinnamon
590 ml water
Remove pumpkin from can and freeze for 1 hour.
In a blender combine partially frozen pumpkin, frozen apple juice concentrate, nutmeg and cinnamon. Blend until smooth. Continue to blend while adding water to fill the blender.
scarlett.............. my dad (82) got diagnosed with this and was given pills to keep on top of it.

however, recently he had been really ill and had a short stay in hospital and whilst he was there they asked us what tablets he was on............to our astonishment the hospital doctor took these pills OFF my old man as he was NOT diabetic at all!!!!!!!
