Why when one buys a single portion of chips from a Chip Shop, do they give you enough to feed a family, and then charge you as much as 1.40 for the privlige. Why can they not serve smaller portions for say 0.50?

Most chip shops I know will serve smaller portions of chips if you ask for them. (On occasion I've had to fib and say the chips were for a small child). If they won't sell you a small portion then vote with your feet and take your business elsewhere!
Where I live we have a market with several chip stalls ..the portions range from a kiddies cone for 45p to a a 70p and a 90p portion.Even the chip shops do smaller portions if you ask them nicely.
Chip shops that don't offer a smaller portion are not really making any attempt to provide you with a service. The difference in cost to them of the extra chips they give you is negligible. The shop is therefore simply preferring to force you to pay 1.40 rather than 50p which would be more convenient to you. It's just more money for them! Just say 'No Thanks' on principle, pay them 0p and go elsewhere.
I've had this problem and asked for small portions only to be refused and had to pay the full price for far more than I could eat :(

I had the option to have less but would still have to pay the full price.
I have never found a standard portion to be particularly large.
I am not fat either!
It depends on where you live, when I lived on the Wirral the portions were huge but now I live near Preston I find that the portions are no where near as big.
