My idiot mate says that if a dog eats a grape it will die. Is this true as I too scared to test it?

No, its not true, my dog loves them :)
Raw onions are bad for dogs. Does something to their white blood cells. Chocolate (in large amounts) is dangerous too.
My three dogs love grapes, apples oranges,in fact most fruit, when we out the gsd will pick blackberrys off bushes very strange
One grape probably will not harm your dog - but I am sure I have read recently of a dog dying from eating grapes - I think it could be something in the skin of the grape (possibly something they spray them with). I think raisons can also be toxic in large numbers.

Its best to make sure any fruit given to your dog has not been sprayed with anything.
Just done a quick search on the internet and found that grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in some dogs. It is not known what causes this or in what quantities. It could be a type of mould on the grapes that is toxic to dogs.

Best to avoid grapes and raisins for your dogs.
chocolate covered raisins maybe as I know choccy can be very harmful for dogs.
Grapes are very bad for your dog. !
My 14 y/o labrador has always eaten grapes/rasins, any fruit, he loves them ! No harm has been done through him eating them either - he loves raw carrots, cucumber, tomatoes too.....
My dog loves grapes but will only eat them if they are given to him in half so he can taste the fleshy inside Not really spoilt!!!
i suppose it would if the grape was the size of a COCONUT
Chocolate, Hot Chocolate, Cocoa, Chocolate Cake
The poison Theobromine is found in the cocoa bean. - milk chocolate contains less than dark. In
dogs chocolate may harm the heart, kidneys and
central nervous system. The effect is very serious because dogs metabolize theobromine, a naturally occurring
substance in chocolate, very slowly.
Signs of Theobromine poisoning include; nausea and vomiting,
restlessness, diarrhoea, muscle tremors, lethargy, depression,
increased urination or incontinence and finally death.
Walnuts and Macadamia nuts

Potatoes
Green skins and Green sprouts in potatoes - although cooked, mashed potato is alright. - Due to
Solanum alkaloids that are found in the green skins and green
sprouts this occurs when the tubers are exposed to the
sunlight during their growing time or after they have been
harvested.

Tea, coffee and cola type drinks
These drinks contain Theobromine.

Raw Liver
If you feed raw liver in large quantities every day it can cause a
vitamin A toxicity in dogs. Especially if your dog is fed a diet
already containing ample Vitamin A.

Fruits
Pear pips, kernels of plums, peaches and apricots, apple pips . They
contain cyanide and in large quantities can prove fatal.

Grapes, Raisins and Sultanas/Golden Raisins
Grapes, raisins and sultanas - extremely poisonous!! - can cause
kidney failure. The poison is, unfortunately, unknown in this case
but it is very dangerous.

Alcohol
Alcohol poisoning is usually fatal.

Onions and Garlic
Onions especially raw onions - sulphur in them cause the problem.
This can damage the red blood cells and cause anaemia. Garlic is
less toxic than onions. If you wish to give your dog garlic to
repel fleas check
Turkey Skin
Currently it is thought that Turkey skin can cause acute pancreatis.

Raw Fish, see also Raw Salmon below
Too much raw fish. This is because some raw fish can cause a
deficiency of the vitamin thiamine (a vitamin B). The symptoms of a
thiamine deficiency include anorexia (complete loss of appetite),
abnormal posture, weakness, seizures, and can even cause death. This
includes cats as well as dogs.

Raw Salmon
Salmon eat snails that carry a fluke that contain bacteria that can
harm dogs if ingested by them. The flukes can be found in any part
of the raw salmon but mainly the head and the guts. Sadly your dog
can be harmed by just coming into contact with the salmons blood.
You can kill this bacteria by freezing, smoking or cooking the fish.
Diagnosis of this is difficult due to the fact that it mimics other
canine diseases like Parvovirus but it is easily treated with
antibiotics once diagnosed. Please be very careful if you take your
dogs anywhere where salmon might be
So your mate's not such an idiot is he?
lankeela you are amazing!!!
I like to help if I can because we can all learn from other people's experiences, and if it saves one dog's life it will have been worth it. I'd hate to lose an animal and then be told by someone who had already suffered '"I could have told you that"!
Erm this worries me a little - here are a list of common substances that in certain quanties (some large, some not) can be fatal to animals

1) Grapes (can causes acute kidney failure) this INCLUDES raisins.
2)Onions
3)Ibuprofen
4)Paracetomol (cats only)
5)Chocolate (the more cocoa the worse) -dogs only
6)Lilies (cats)

I could go on but it would take ages.... Please be careful.
The list is actually longer than what lankeela found, check out

and look at health and foods that are harmful to your dog.
It's all about moderation alot of times. just because one dog can go it's whole life eating 10 grapes a day and nothing happens doesn't mean they are not harmful to your dog. "My dog ate ______ lots of times and didn't die, so ______ don't kill dogs." That logic is no better than "My dog runs in the street all the time and has never been hit by a car, so dogs never get hit by cars."
