me and my boyf have roughly �60 to spend on a meal in london. can anyone reccommend anywhere?
we heard of a thai place called mango tree, and a fench vietnamese place called bam-bou. anyone any experience of either of these?
it doesn't have to be top class, we don't even have to spend the whole �60, just a decent restaurant with yummy food!

I�ve been to mango tree and it was lovely! The food, service & ambience were all great but we spent about �70 - �75 on our meal so a bit more than you�ve planned. Maybe you could save money by skipping on starters or deserts or alternatively check out www.toptable.co.uk as they sometimes have deals on there for mango tree. Hope you enjoy your meal out!
I've got two recommendations for you, both in the Covent Garden area.
Sarastro is a wonderful restaurant with excellent service, outstanding food and amazing decor. (It's laid out like an opera theatre. Diners eat in 'private boxes') A three-course meal for two, with wine, will probably cost around �60.

Just down the road, however, there's the best bargain in London. Bistro 1, on Southampton Street, will serve you 3 courses for just �7.50 at lunchtime or �9.90 for dinner. At those prices you might expect that '3 courses' might just mean something like soup, burger & fries, and ice cream. A look at the menu, though, will show you that a typical meal might be a starter of Smoked Duck Salad with Mixed Berry Coulis, a main course of Fillet of Sea Bream topped with Smoked Salmon and Saffron Cream Sauce served on a bed of mashed potato, followed by Creme Caramel. (I have to admit that the desserts aren't particularly adventurous but, at those prices, you can't really complain). The menu has a 'mediterranean' theme and there are two other branches in central London. Despite the low food prices, the restaurant doesn't try to make excessive profits on their wines. (They're all reasonably priced).
It's only a week since my most recent visit to Bistro 1. The food was great and the service was excellent. A three course dinner for two, with a bottle of house wine, would cost you roughly �30.

Sarastro is an interesting experience but I thought the food was awful. I'd go once for the decor and the atmosphere, but once is enough.
It's hard to recommend anywhere as people's tastes differ: I really like spicy food so all the restaurants cater for people with tough palates. And is the food more important or do you want somewhere with a romantic atmosphere?
You'll get more for your money away from the tourist traps of Covent Garden and expense-account diners in the City. Chinese restaurants in Soho always offer value for money (but rather rough and ready service). You could always try a tapas bar; that way you can control the amount you eat. I always enjoy the food at the Tas restaurants .. but perhaps not the most romantic ambience.
If you don't mind an entirely vegetarian menu, the Gate in Hammersmith is excellent: you'll spend about �60/65 I guess but it's qualility food in a lovely setting.
The farther out you go, the better value you'll have: the Indian restaurants in Tooting are fantastic but a bit of a way out.

I have actually been to sarastros was an amazing dining experience but the food wasn't that great I thought. Will look into bistro 1 though.
The picnic is not an option as we're driving up friday night after work, getting a meal, then stopping in a hotel then having tea at the ritz saturday morning all for my birthday, so the meal friday night doesn't need to be massively extravagant and special - just somewhere nice with good food and good atmosphere.
will look into all of your suggestions though - and anyone who's been to bam-bou would love to know what its like!

Well if you like Indian with a twist I recommend La Porte des Indes, which does Indian food with a French twist. A fantastic restaurant with great ambience, and decor (they have a waterfall in the middle of the restaurant)! and delicious food. As for Thai food I would suggest Blue Elephant - equally delicious.
