Why is asparagus so expensive?

Its labour and resource intensive. A good asparagus bed is rasied and can take 12 months to prepeare properly. There is a short growing season so demand always outstrips supply. When our season is over we import it and this adds to the cost of the year round price.

Since the war in Iraq, the price of a barrel of crude asparagus has risen dramaticaly. And of course it's us the consumer that ultimately foots the hike in prices (and then some). So we can thank this lousy Labour government and it's illegal invasion of Iraq.

The prices should drop when they are in peak season (which I think is around May and June though I could be wrong.) Around this time, stop by the local farm shop or the market and you should get a good price and they will be lovely and juicy.

I heard they only grow into edible vegetables in their second year after planting...
