Sometimes, next to the weight on a jar of jam for example, there is an 'e' which is big but in lower case. What does it mean?

I think it means net weight (i.e weight of the contents, excluding the jar, lid label etc.

A half guess anyway
It is 'e' for Europe. It means it is an EU approved size container. You'll see it on drink bottles and all sorts of packaging.
rekstout, you're right, the e means approximately i.e. approximate weight.
