I ate out on Tuesday and on the menu for starters was A Scotch Egg for £6.50. My local Morrison's sell 4 Scotch Eggs for £1.75.I used to eat out every Friday and a Coke drink varied from £1.00 to £2.85 for a 330 glass yet I can buy 2 litre Coca Cola for £1.50 or even a supermarket brand for .60 pence for 2 litres.
I had a 16 oz Steak Pudding for £14,75 which after stripping away the pudding and the gravy perhaps there was 4 ounces of beef

it can be, but for some the mark up is horrendous. I took my brother and SIL out to lunch and the bill came to 130 quid, much of that the wine and a few beers. i was happy to pay it, but they do get away with murder in some places.

Baldric - I've had no problems, and you can choose where you want to sit.
There are good deals out there if you search them out.Last week we ate out at a pub and had a good two course meal, which included homemade meat pie, mash and three vegetables, as well as a pudding and the two course special came to £9.95p. Today I ate out at a lunch club and had a two course meal for only £5.50p. The deals are out there.

Possibly ??

You're right GM, there are some deals and fair prices, it may take a bit of research and getting recommendations.
Well I would say the eating out is still very expansive as compare to home ..
that does sound expensive, i wouldn't eat there again that's for sure.
besides who has a starter of scotch egg??
You can’t compare retail prices to restaurant prices. Rates, staff wages, tax and insurance, fuel costs, cleaning, furnishings, equipment – all of this and more has to be paid for before profit is realised. Running a restaurant is an expensive business.

We frequent a couple of nearby restaurants where an excellent 3 course lunch is just under £15 - less if you settle for just one or two courses. Seems more than reasonable.
There are some great deals if you go to the right places. For example, I had one of the best lunches I've ever eaten (with outstanding service, in a smart restaurant) for £6.50 not long back:

A 2-course lunch here (also superb) costs only £10.20:

However some places are getting quite pricey. Many pubs around here in Suffolk charge from about £14 for a main course. A can of Coke from a seaside stall in Southwold will cost you at least £2.00.
Just about everything in Southwold is London prices!
I suppose if you can afford a beach hut in Southwold, Diddlydo, you can also afford a couple of quid for a can of Coke:

;-)
There are still plenty of ways to get a cheap fill out if that's all you want. A meal out in a restaurant is the whole thing for me, being served, ambience, company apart from the food so £130 for 4 for example is quite acceptable to me.
I think it is getting a bit too expensive. I like 2 for £10 but when it's almost £20 a head, it's a bit annoying..

I love wagamamas but it is soo expensive. I usually get a tapas of sides but even a main meal is £15 per head.. Quality food though
I hope the starter scotch egg was at least a good runny one. I'd pay £6.50 in a decent restaurant for that.

The markup on drinks is ridiculous I know. I have a friend who owns a pub and he once told me how much he pays for the basic beer. I couldn't believe it. I don't think I should say on here.
clover i worked in a pub and what goes on you wouldn't believe....
^^^ I've run bars, including doing the books, so I know all about the mark-ups.

However things still seem to be following the same rules of thumb that have always applied. i.e. in a social club (where you don't intend to make much profit and/or you've got volunteer bar staff) you double the purchase price of the booze you buy to give you the sales price. In a pub you treble it and in restaurant you quadruple it.

e.g. if you're buying in your lager at £1.50 per pint, you sell it at £3.00 in a club, £4.50 in a pub and £6.00 in a restaurant. Similarly if you buy a bottle of wine for £6, you expect to get £12 from the sale of its contents in a club, £18 in a pub and £24 in a restaurant.
The more expensive the better, keeps out the families with a load of bloody kids.
