Is it true that hot water freezes more quickly than cold water

That scene in Home Alone would suggest so, however that film also suggests that you would forget to take your kids on holiday with you.....Kevin

If you google on "does hot water freeze faster", there are loads of websites saying yes....and no!!

What this boils down to (sorry about that) is that with equal amounts of water in sealed containers the hotter one will always take longer to freeze, the simple argument that in open containers the hotter water evaporates more while hot and then there is less water to cool down might be true but is really a cheating method.



I have heard that hot water freezes faster than cold . The reason is supposedly that the hot container will make better contact with the surface its on as it melts the ice under it which can then conduct heat better
You could experiment!.
