+ 1 for taking cheese out of fridge to get to room temp. It has TASTE! ;-)
Any cheese will be tasteless if eaten straight from the fridge. Needs a good 2 hours at room temp first. For a strong tasting cheese try any supermarket extra mature cheddar and/or named varieties such as the Davidstow mentioned above.
Do not put cheese in a fridge at all ever! It does not mature correctly and develop the full flavour unless it is at cool room temperature,a fridge is too cold.
You should always show faith in cheeses.

The Lord Cheeses or Kraft cheeses?
Eddie - in a perfect world I agree with you but in centrally heated houses it's not such a great idea, especially if it's an unpasteurised cheese. Of course if you have a cool cellar or proper larder, just keep the cheese there.

I am partial to Emmenthal or Gruyère. My all-time favourite though is Camembert which MUST be eaten at room temperature.

Thank you all so much for replies . I will try leaving it out before I use it and next one I buy will leave it in porch cupboard it is cold there . It makes sense leaving it out like when I have a salad I always make it about an hour before eating it as I don't like it cold from the fridge . I will keep in mind the other cheeses mentioned and do a trial run on them . I have plenty supermarkets not far .
I was going to say 'eat at room temp.' but others are way before me. A good Lancashire is very tangy, you can get 'crumbly' Lancs. or 'Tasty' Lancs.. Inglewhite blue Lancashire is a good cheese.
Anyone old enough to remember 'Empire' cheese, which was actually New Zealand cheddar? Very dark and strong.
Give Canadian Black diamond a try. A lovely strong cheddar and great with a pint of real ale.

Will look out for that one too thanks Derek
Cathedral City is horrible plastic cheese.

I buy Truckle Brother Cheddar from Morrisons. They are also in Iceand and other shops.

I like the Red Hot Dutch but only have a tiny sliver at a time or it will blow your head off. It's basically Edam impregnated with chillies.
The Cheddars that I think have the best flavours are Keen's, and Montgomery's.

Keen's is more dry and tangy, if you want a really strong Cheddar.

I get it from La Fromagerie, but they sell Keen's on the Deli counter at Waitrose.
Ward-Minter's cheese can be found on the south coast. Be careful where you buy it, as it can be faked....
tallegio is my fave
