Yes, basically. Tails, I think of langoustine, which are bigger prawns - but most commercial products are just prawns, I'm told.

No.

No it's not. Used to be but no longer. Now just processed fish tails.
^^ I'm wrong, then, Sapele. OK, but that's what I've been told.
Proper Scampi should be Langoustines, sometimes referred as Dublin Bay Prawns.

But it sometimes isn't !
I am reliably informed that they use Monkfish tails. Strictly speaking I would have thought that it contravenes trading standards as one would expect to get prawns in one form or another. The clue is in the price you pay in the supermarket.
Gosh! Thank you Kevlin569.
Jackdaw.

Why, Scampi isn't a species of fish or crustacean so it can be anything in batter.
It seems to me it could be almost anything, which is why I rarely partake.
Read the packaging or ask the staff if you are eating out.
OG, in the Uk its illegal for anything sold as scampi to be anything bit Nephlops Norvegicus.....it might be chopped, shaped and flavoured but it cannot contain any other fish or fish substitute.
Are they Scam Prawns.
I fondly remember that height of luxury that was scampi and chips in a basket. Many a young lady succumbed to my charms after sutch extravagance.
^^ Correction, such.
I hope we have cleared this murky subject up. Not sure why it comes up so often !

If you are offered anything that isn't Nephlops Norvegicus, then refuse to pay for it. Langoustines are easily available just about anywhere, and are extremely easy to cook, taking only 5 mins. With a glass of Chablis and plenty of crusty bread, they are a veritable feast.

Best bought between September and May, Whenever I am in my 'van in Cornwall, I go to the fisherman's cooperative in Newlyn, and buy a huge bag for less than a tenner.
According to Woofie's link all sorts of things end up in it in the UK.
I have scampi for dinner tonight (well surf and turf) the packet says crustacean. The rest of the ingredients are for the coating.
I remember those days, sam ,washed down with a Brandy and Babysham and even Quasimodo couldn't fail.
