i dont get it - i thought that the common logic behind not eating meat was to not eat a living....thingy so what, do fish not live??

weird

Some veggies avoid meat because it is purpose reared as food and killed inhumanely. Fish are harvested natrually from the sea, and therefore do not fall within the 'inhumanity' argument.

That's the position as it was explained to me - ethics obviously vary among individuals.

People who eat fish are called . pescetarians ..they are not Vegetarians.Btw...im..also a Veggie(:)
I'm a vegan and i'm glad most people have said the obvious: people who eat animals aren't vegetarian! I think the argument Andy outlined is nonsense (Andy, I understand it's not yours by the way!) - fish are caught and killed to be eaten, and they feel pain and suffer in the same way as any other animal. I've also heard the explanation that fish have no central nervous system and so can't feel pain which is also a lot of baloney. IMO, anyone calling themselves a veggie but eating fish gives true veggies a bad name.
On this subject I just had lunch in a coffee bar, and they had the V symbol next to a tuna & pasta salad with pesto dressing. I queried this with them and they said it was vegetarian. I pointed out that tuna is fish not veggie but they didn't want to know!
I haven't eaten meat since I was little for one reason only: I don't like it. I don't consider myself different, special or a vegetarian for that matter because I can't stand all the hoo-ha that generally goes around with it. People should just eat what they want without making an issue of things.

Hi carol ann, well said, but I do agree with ursula66 on the basis that all food not just veggie should be labeled correctly. However I suppose the problem is if some of the junk that is sold was correctly labelled nobody would eat it.

OOPS, sorry Ursula 62 I made you 4 years older than you should be!
I read all athe posts about veggies with interest, and I have to as nicola_red something, as she's a vegan, obviously we all have different views, and please correct me if i'm wrong, but my understanding of Veganism,(if thats the right word), is that your against the taking of life for food, but surely, and believe me, i'm not being antaganistic, I just want yo know, if for example. if you pick a nut from the ground, iis that not preventing life from being born?.

vegans don't eat any animal products or by products, e.g. honey. But they do eat nuts and seeds and any vegetable produce.

I don't think it's about not taking life for food- I think its more a respect for animals, and not wanting another sentient being to be exploited to feed humans.

actually quapmoc, you made me 4 years younger!
Ursula60, (Getting younger by the minute), yes, I understand your arguement, but my problem is, and i'm a fully paid up omnivore, do all living things have feelings, we don't know enough to say, but after attending an allotment for some years, I firmly believe that plants do, so, when you pluck, for example, a Carrot fresh from the ground, and you start eating it, your eating it alive, is it in pain?. Don't send for the men in white coats, please, Don't forget, plants do everything we do, but on a different time scale, and in different ways.

Chessman I remember years ago on Tomorrow's World (that dates me) they showed a machine that could tell who had "murdered" a plant - it provided two suspects - the actual person who had torn off the leaf and someone who had mown their lawn three days ago. They also recorded a tree "screaming" as branches were being chopped off. So maybe there's something in the "plants have feelings too" theory. But I don't think that vegetarians or vegans consider this. I have come across a couple of fruitarians who eat seeds and fruits but no leaves, stalks or roots (as this would kill or harm the plant), but I think they are few and far between.

I am what you call a pescatarian (real name) or a vegequarian (funny name) Basically vegitarian who does eat fish. But I rather not be put in catogories and just call myself a non meat eater. Alot of people call themselves vegetarians for quickness or cause they don't know the real name of being a fish eater only. Anyways. Could go on. But wont.

Andy hughs. Sorry to post again everyone. But thats exactly what I think but I didn't wanna get into all that. So thnx for putting that. LoL. Bye

Smoggies daughter

This is the last post I'm posting. Sorry. But there is a huge difference between a fish being caught after being free and not being treated cruely. To an animal. Being killed in an unhumane disgusting humiliating way after spending it's life being treated disgustingly. Not being able to move no doubt. And all that. Read up on it if U wanna. There is a huge difference. Yet again I could go on. LoL. But I'm gonna go for good now. Bye

Smoggies daughter

I have often seen fish-containing products labelled as vegetarian, often in hotels and the like.

I wonder how many vegetarians have eaten a caesar salad without realising the dressing contains anchovies!
