I've just opened a bottle of Lidl's Claret, priced at just £2.99 (down from £3.99). I was expecting it to be high in tannins and lacking in body but it's surprisingly quaffable! (OK, maybe it's a little sweet for a red wine and it's certainly not a classic Bordeaux but it's definitely not going straight down the sink!).

If you're interested, most Lidl stores are open until 6.00pm on Christmas Eve and you probably won't find it on the main wine display. (Look for an 'end of aisle' display instead).

Happy drinking and Merry Christmas!

Thanks Chris, has you know I'm an ale guy but seeing as it's you thats recommending this quaffable wine I think I may well pay Lidl's a visit tomorrow.
[i]by the way, I didn't understand those second two words in the op, but you knew that didn't you ;-)[i].

I only use long words when I'm 'in drink', Tony ;-)
Hi Chris....I'm just about off to bed having watched on TV Peter Kay's story of his rise to stardom. I never watch TV without drinking a few glasses of the red stuff. Mostly it's nothing more than Plonk and this evening it has been Sainsbury's boxed House Merlot.....which is quite good for quaffing.

Cheers to you for Christmas from me and my wife

Hans ☺☺☺

Ah, now that I understand, thanks shoota.

Thanks for your post, Hans.

I quite like a 'pure' Merlot myself although, given a choice, I'd probably opt for a Shiraz or something like a decent Montepulciano (which is what I've just finished off before opening this Claret which, of course, is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon anyway).

Merry Christmas to you and Mrs HU!

Merry Christmas to Shoota and Mamyalynne!

( . . . and, if I've not already said it, to Tony too, of course!)
Good night tonyav and the rest of you insomniacs :-)

My wish is for everyone to have a happy Christmas. Unfortunately, it will never be the case; which is really sad.

Hans.
Thanks Chris !

I have been a fan of Lidle's wine for ages. They do a Pinotage, for about £3:99, or thereabouts and its 14.5% !
Nice one Chris. I tried it too. It's chuck it around the garden at a barbie stuff, but as you say enjoyable.
Lidl do some excellent wines at good prices. They also have an excellent gin at £14 a litre!
That's an impressively cheap wine - given that the tax and duty on a £2.99 bottle is just over £2.58, the cost of the actual wine (including growing/producing/bottling/shipping) and profit is a tad under 42p.

I'll get a bottle though - if it's good then it's a steal - if not it can go into the mulled wine :)

Bottoms up

SD xx

That Waitrose wine is OK, Murdo - I've drunk it at parties and been pleasantly surprised.

[ £4.99 is an interesting price point - it means that the wine costs the same as the duty (£2.08) - and then we pay VAT on both! I've never been happy with the concept of paying "tax on tax" ]
