Assuming you are neither Muslim nor vegetarian, would you be put off buying meat if you knew it was slaughtered the Halal way?

I have had this email from Tesco.
"For example, all our New Zealand lamb meets Halal standards."

I know for a fact that this isn't labelled on the product nor sold in the Halal section - I would expect some sort of label or symbol to indicate to Muslims that the product is suitable for them.

Could it be that Tesco believe they would sell less it the meat was labelled as Halal?

Madmen, that is my point!

The New Zealand lamb sold in Tesco is ALL Halal and not labelled as such.

In the Halal section of my Tesco it is mostly mutton, not lamb, but labelled as Halal.
not sure understand that last bit about Alistair Campbell?
so the New Zealanders are all eating halal lamb? or is it just us...
What's your objection to eating halal hc ? is it the prayer?
i think for me its having it's throat slit, never mind saying a prayer over the animal.
Lol. Sorry, I'll just go back to sleep.

I apologise, I missed that bit in your original post and just went in and answered.

I've just had a quick look online and there's no mention of the lamb being halal - although there's no mention of where it even comes from, either.
Abbatoirs use stun guns that penetrate the brain before cutting the jugular to bleed a beast. Halal only cut the jugular & chop the writhing beast - like dogs on a rabbit but for prayers.
It all tastes the same
Well I think you'll find that happens in non-halal slaughter too em
that's not quite true tamborine (although it is of Kosher) as you'll see if you read the link I gave

the vast majority use electric stunning
perhaps i should have added that it doesn't appear to be the case they stun the animals first, according to any number of websites you look at in regards to halal.
Jtp, Ive worked in abbatoirs & lived abroad to witness same. If halal were humane why have expensive humane methods ?
// I think it would be hypocritical of any meat eater to start drawing fine distinctions about the way the animal died to supply their food. //

Too right andy...flipping muslims and their halal nonsense.

Jake, //Given that meat can be stunned for Halal it appears that the only difference is that it's throat is slit by a muslim who is muttering a prayer at the time.//

Did you actually read your link, or are you just selecting bits to suit your 'in defence of Islam' agenda?

//'Stunning just gives you five seconds to get the chain around its leg and get it into a position to slaughter. It's not like an English stun, it just lasts five seconds, that's all. At the point that the throat is slashed, the animal has revived. It is kicking.'//
Ludwig, ha ha! Very good! :o)

Thanks for that link, Madmen.

I am finding all the replies interesting, so thank you all for answering.
I'm glad I don't shop at Tesco.

It's Waitrose as well, Ludwig.
And Sainsbury, Asda, big restaurant chains, pub chains, sports venues, schools......
As the only diffrence between Halal slaughter and 'ordinary slaughter' is that Halal meat is slaughtered while verses of the Quran are being recited I don't see any diffrence. A 'Halal' slaughter house just has a loudspeaker with a tape loop of recitations from the Quran playing in the background as the animals are being killed. The rest of it is the same 'use a sharp knife , make a deep incision , ensure the jugular vein is cleanly severed, drain all blood. That is standard for any slaughter house , you are hardly likedly to use a blunt knife are you ?.
The simple measure of a tape playing the Quran means that the meat can be sold as Halal with out more expence.
Jewish slaughter for Kosher meat has to be carried out by a trained (Jewish) Kosher slaughter-man under conditions prescribed by the Synagogue in a specific Kosher slaughter house , which is exempt from the regulations ( about stunning the animal first) that other slaughter houses ,including Halal must keep to.
But we don't seem to hear much complaint about that.
