Told you it would catch on.

How do the British manage when we go abroad?

And I don't mean Benidorm.

£500?

That's their benefit cap for a whole week gone then?
when britons go abroad they mainly seem to isolate themselves to expat circles. no doubt if they needed to speak to an official, and english speaking one would be made available. thats certainly what i have found in my global travelling and also expat experience.

expenditure is only £1m a year. its small beans really to achieve full understanding and application of the law.

Well, last year, the local council here had to put up English versions of the parking zone signs, because the Brits claimed they couldn't understand them.
If you wish to attract tourists to help your local economy it is only reasonable that you cater for them. But if you live somewhere for any reasonable length of time you ought to learn the local language.
I couldn't think of anything worse than going to live in Spain on a complex full of narrow minded Brits, only eating British food and watching the soaps on their satalite TV's. If I was going to live abroad I would make sure to live among the locals, socialise with them and eat their food, as far away from the Brit expats as possible.

Couldn't agree more, it's a pity all the overseas settlers to this country don't think the same, there would hopefully be none of this division amongst the races then.
'Some' of the overseas settlers!!
ummm - much as it pains me - I have to defend AOG's comment. He's not saying that all immigrants don't speak English, he means that it would be great if all DID speak English.

Subtle, but important difference.

I'm now going to scrub myself down with Dettol.
This is totally different to the Welsh parking sign scenario.

That happened in Wales and didn't have the sign in Welsh.

This one is in England and the sign IS in English, and other languages.
It annoys me when I go to the cashpoint at my local supermareket and have to confirm what they can do with their offer to have the screen in Welsh before I start. I'm not even in Wales ! I don't need it in any language except the one spoken in the coutry I'm in. Maybe they should ask if I need it in any of the others here too before I start. http://en.wikipedia.o..._of_languages_by_name

If you are reading this Zhukov this is typical of what I mean, here we have a ABer who has admitted that he agrees with me, but then that is not good enough, he then cannot help himself but to finish off with a completely unnecessary insult against me.

It is easy to say ignore it, it is only in jest, when one is not the recipient.

Had I said "I shook hands with sp1814, but I then had to disinfect my hand", the 'race card' would be out in a shot.
Play the ageism card then AOG !

Doesn't carry as much clout it seems.

Is it not you that has started a thread about someone being offended by a jokey cartoon?
For Funks Sake!!!

Right that's it - my new years resolution is over.
