Northern black turkey advertised by Jamie Oliver on the Sainsburys adverts

I thought a turkey was a turkey, what's the difference between a "normal" turkey and the northern black turkey and is it worth getting?

I'd suspect it is a brand name, pushed to make it sound special. But I am just guessing.
It may be a breed of Bronze turkey.They used to be more common but we Brits fell out of love with them as the quills are very dark,are more difficult to totally remove and don't look quite so perfect when roasted.The meat is slightly 'gamier' in flavour. I used to sell a lot of turkeys at the shop where I worked and we sold equal amounts of white and bronze (the bronze were always about 40p a pound more expensive)

that is a breed of turkey and is most often sold at a specialist butcher, we get one sent from Lincolnshire , and the best tasting too
Jamie Oliver is now working for Morrisons, so has changed which Turkey he thinks is the best. Just get the best value for money and forget about these money grabbing chefs.

Bronze or Doubled Breasted Bronze or Black turkeys are normally reared on open farms and mature more slowly than the white turkeys that are reared indoors. They have a better flavour and cost more because they live longer and cost more to rear
