Returning to work after maternity leave problem

When pregnant and preparing for maternity leave I'd always made it known to my employer that I'd want to come back part time, so they were aware and could plan. I have applied for fleixible working and asked for 3 specific days a week because of other things in my life, care for grandparent, mother working certain days and husband working shifts etc. Therefore, my mother can only look after the baby on specific days. However, my manager wants me in on different days than I can do.... they want another meeting with me - what are the implications for me? It is quite a large organisation - if a position is not available in my old department do they have to find me another position elsewhere? or can they refuse point blank to accommodate me those 3 days and sack me? would I then have to pay my maternity leave pay back? any advise would be appreciated....

spose they could just pay you anyway to loll around at home, that should make you happy having to make no commitment,

unless you had not realised the business is not there purely for your benefit,

sounds like the job is not one of those important 'other things in my life',

nothing wrong with that view at all obviously, but dont expect an employer that has not instigated the circumstances that now require change to adopt the policy of 'you say jump...and i ask how high'

perhaps helpmetoo would prefer to see parents on benefits rather than trying to work around their children. That would be a shame.
I thinks its great to see mums trying to work and make a go of things rather than just say 'ah well i cant work full time now so wont bother'

Thanks for your help redcrx I'll check that website out.

Helpmetoo's comments do sound a little strong... ? Asking to work partime/flexibly in 2008 is a perfectly reasonable request, not only for mothers but FATHERS and CARERS also ... I DO want to go back to work and would prefer not to claim benefits.
have you also tried looking at childcare. the government will usually pay towards that via tax credits as long as its with a registered childminder. It may help you come to a compromise with your employers.
