New owners honouring customer contracts

I've paid for a 1 year contract with company A in Sept 2007. In Nov 2007, company B took over company A and have requested payment for a one year contract from Nov 2007, saying that the payment and commitment from Sept 2007 is invalid now.

I thought that when a company gets taken over, it gets taken over with its assets and liabilities (my contract) and therefore I thought my contract should still be honoured until September 2008.

Is this the case? Could anyone shed any light on this?
