Hi, Can anyone tell me what extra duties or perks a Headgirl had at school? Do schools still have headgirls now?
Many thanks.

I can't tell you what extra duties or perks there might be, but I can confirm that I know the local Public girls school still has a Headgirl and the comprehensive that my daughter goes to have both a Head Girl and a Head Boy
my son is deputy headboy (i,m so proud!! although i think he should have been headboy) he helps give out awards, certificates etc to the pupils, represents school on outings and when visiters come into school he helps show them around and only today he went to a funneral of a dinnerladys husband.
When i was at school we had head girl and boy, they basically helped out the teachers an example of this is at dinner times a head girl or boy or even a prefect would 'stand guard' at the main school doors to make sure only the year 11's got into the study area to study for GCSE's. I think they basicaally take over some of the teachers roles at break times also if there was any out of school presentations etc the head girl and boy would attend, it was just basic things really..to sum it up I would say they are basically a teachers assistant and are there to represent the school.

Thank you for your answers, can someone also tell me how you actually get elected headgirl or headboy, do the pupils vote for you or is it the teachers decision alone? And how long does the term of headgirl/boy last for, does it for example last for one year then someone else gets their turn?
Thanks x
I was deputy headgirl. headgirl was picked by the teachers, deputy by a sixth form vote. (hence little miss 'do my own thing and toe the line only if I want to' was not picked by the teachers!) I guess all schools will select headg/b's differently. I didnt have to do any door guarding and the job wasnt very onerus at all but gave you a bit of kudos and maybe it helps on CV-although I've not included it on any job apps for years!
I was head girl at my school, had to stand duty at the end of breaks to make sure no running in the corridors, represent the school at things - didn't do that much but was good being an authority figure. I was supposedly voted in by my peers, (we had a ballot) but since I was an unpopular girly swot I think I probably was chosen by the teachers!!!
I was Head Girl many moons ago and the role is really to represent the pupils of the school at formal events. If the school is being presented with something then Head boy and Girl are often the recipients. The post was selected by staff then so was not necessarily popular with other pupis. My other role was to organise prefect duties particularly at lunch time supervision.

I do know that it scored points when I was interviewed for college as it was seen as a mark of success at the end of your formal schooling.

This many years later may daughter's local High School still selects Head Boy and Girl but it is an elected position by the pupils of that year. So not necessarily popular with the staff. At her school they give the vote of thanks on special occasions such as presentation evenings.

Oh well, you can't please everyone.
