Hello, i was given this website in the hope i could find out more about my grandma Elizabeth Smith and when she died. I have tried the usual family tree websites and sent off for death certificates but with Smith as a surname it is not easy ! I know that my gran was born in Gorton ,Manchester 1890 and married at St Cross church in Clayton 1915. Her maiden was Ledson. My grandad was Sydney. They had three boys Sydney, Eric [who died in WW11] and my dad Harry. My dad never spoke about my grandparents and there is just myself and my sister now. There's no one else to ask. Francine.

1891 Census -
Parents
John b 1857 - Born Liverpool
Emma b 1854 " "
siblings-
Sarah b 1880 " "
Marian b1882 " "
Emma b 1884 Born Manchester
Florence b 1887 " "
Herbert b 1888 " "
Elizabeth b 1890 " "
As you say it's a common name, have you any details of the death certs you sent for, then they could be ruled out?
Emma's maiden name was Newman.I think John's DOB should be 1853 rather than 1857 according to the other census',still looking for a marriage for him and Emma.
I can see the marriage on FreeBDM website.....Ledson / Smith in Prestwich Q3 1915 Vol 8D Page 705 you can get a copy of the marriage cert which shoul show parents info and also who the witnesses were etc.

Looked for children on that site and found 5 - only 1 born in Prestwich though which was Harry in 1923 Q2 Vol 8D page 680

the others were Ernest 1920 Wirrall, George H 1932 West derby, Alan 1934 West Derby, Elsie J 1936 Liverpool all these were born to a Smith who's mothers maiden name was Ledson.

raining today so stuck indoors so i'll have a look for you
okay:
1891 census on Ancestry:
John Ledson born abt 1856 Liverpool general labourer
Emma Ledson abt 1853 London
sarah A 1879 L'pool
Marian 1881 L'pool
Emma Jane 1884 Manchester
Florence Mary 1886 ''
Herbert John 1888 ''
Elizabeth 1890 Manc'str (your nan)

I've found Herbert, Florence, Emma and Elizabeth's births on FreeBDM site as well so you can find the reference numbers for their birth crets if you want them - that site is free to use
1901 census from Ancestry:

living at 3 Truro(?) Rd, Gorton

John Charles marr to Emma

children (3 now working) -
Sarah Ann, Marian, Emma Jane, Florence Mary, Herbert John, Elizabeth (your nan), and now includes Ernest Charles born Jan 1901

hope that all helps. The birth info for all the children (reference numbers etc) is on the freebdm website so you could order birth certs if you wish
bit more for you:
1881 Census living at 7 Burleigh Rd, Everton, Liverpool.
John Charles Ledson working as a Foreman for Fruit Warehouse
Emma Ledson
and 1 child, Sarah A Ledson

also at address is John's brother in-law, Samuel Newman

seems reasonable to assume Emma's maiden name was Newman so should be able to track-back that side of the family searching for Emma Newman marrying John C Ledson
been a busy lad today -

Charles Ledson (your great, great grandad) Married Sarah Smith in 1850 in Liverpool the reference is Liverpool Q4 Vol 20 Page 404

Charles is working as a Cotton Porter.

Charles was born in 1825 and Sarah in 1823 both in Liverpool. They were living in Everton, Liverpool in the 1861 census, and with them were children:
John Charles Ledson (who later married Emma Newman)
Martha Jane born 1856
Walter Theo born 1859

also there was a nephew, Thomas Smith Reeve which will help trace other brothers/sisters.

Hope all this helps - should take you back about 3 or 4 generations. Happy to help look for more for you but don't want to spoil your own searching. Ancestry throws up lots of info, and there are already members with family tree's for your relatives. You could join on a free 1 month membership and have a look yourself, maybe contact the other people searching your tree. Good luck
Finally.....

looks like Elizabeth (born 24 Nov 1889) died in 1978 in Birkenhead age 88

the reference for it is Q2 Vol 37 Pg 792
Question Author
Hi. Thanks for my answers on my gran. Some good info and ideas so i will be able to carry on with my search. Does anyone know when the 1921 census will be released to the public ?
Probably in 2020 or 2021.
The 1911 came out early in 2009 .... so hopefully this will happen with the 1921 too.
Accessing the 1921 Census .... when will the 1921 Census be released?

The ruling by the Information Commissioner that resulted in the 1911 census being opened early does not apply to the 1921 census because, unlike the 1911 census, the 1921 census was conducted under the 1920 Census Act, which is still in force and which contains a statutory prohibition on disclosure.

The stated government position from the ONS is "its intention to release the entirety of the 1921 census returns in 2022, in accordance with the non-statutory '100 year rule' which was adopted to reflect this undertaking of confidentiality".
