I having been trying for some time to track down an ancestor who went to america in the early 1900's how would I find any records that are searchable online.

Any help appreciated.

There are passenger lists and also census returns for the US for 1890-1930- all available on ancestry.com
The downside of this otherwise excellent site is it charges pretty well:(
