I have wondered this for a while now.Does anyone know why are you required to give your address when you return an item for a refund and is anything done with your details after this point-ie are they kept on the shop's computer system or passed onto the manufacturer if the item was returned due to faulty goods.

Usually this is to protect the company from staff fraud. If a company suspects a member of staff of fraud (e.g. processing phantom or multiple refunds) they may try to contact the customer to verify the transaction.
And also if the same person keeps returning items, they will mark you as a bad customer.
