What are the chances of getting pregnant if you've have sex when still lightly bleeding? I'm really REALLY irregular but I'm a month and a half late. Thats nothing though as I've missed a period for 10 months before and have had a period for over a year and a half, non-stop, although light. I've been to see 2-3 doctor s about my irregular periods but he says that my natural cycle just seems to be all over the place.

Thanks! x

As far as I understand, you could still be releasing an egg, so could still get pregnant. Maybe you should take a test just in case.
Gosh and i thought i was irregular....what with mine being maximum a week late....

Yes its a NIGHTMARE! Anyway, the dr told me that the only way to regulate them would be to go on the pill, but as i'm not in a relationship anymore, I thought it better to just keep off them for health's sake as there is a history of breast cancer in my family.

There may be an alternative way of regulating them... must visit the health food shop.

Yes, I think i'll do a pregnancy test this weekend then when I get paid.

Thanks! X
have they done a blood test to see if you have PCOS?

Oh oh.... whats PCOS?! Is it life threatening?!

I finish work now, but I will check your answer tonight when I ger home!!!!

Thanks! X
So if I read this right, you are not in a relationship so you are not on the pill, but it would appear that you are (potentially) having unprotected sex even though your periods are very irregular? PCOS as far as I know is not life-threatening, more about that here.

jeanette i have the same kind of irregularity - every 5,6 or 7 weeks - they are heavy and painful for the first couple of days and someone suggested to me that i might have PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome). my friend has just been diognosed following a barrage of tests and whilst i think i may have it - i just can't face the tests...

Morning,

Hi Octavius... yes, sadly you're right, I had unprotected sex with an old flame, but I guess I thought I'd be safe as I was in the very light, finishing stages of my period (last 2-3 days from a 2 weeks period, if I remember correctly)...

Minimonkey, my periods vary from being fairly heavy but NEVER painful, its extremely rare that i get any kind of period pains, if I do, its for about 10mns tops, so i'm very lucky in that respect.

However, if you have any doubts, you should definately get this PCOS test, I think I might too.... please don't leave it too late. X
PCOS is poly cystic ovarian syndrome because its a syndrome you could have it with only having one or two the symptoms. It can interfere with your menstrual cycle and fertility, often because of the ovarian cysts only one ovary might be working.

lots of information can be found here. There are lots of things that can be done to control the syndrome if it turns out you have it. I have been very lucky in the it was only my menstrual cycle that ever got screwed up and I have to diet and excercise twice as hard to lose any weight. However getting pregnant actually helped kick start the ovary that wasnt working back into action and I am now 100% in working order. Also keeping your weight down will help too.
