I can't remember what I did really. I think I washed all the hand me downs...and there was loads of them. Don't think I washed the new ones.
I didn't wash new ones - I suppose some people might to make them softer?
Question Author
I've heard its best to wash new clothes
I always washed everything, whether new or hand-me-downs.
My reason was to make them softer.
I've never heard that one - maybe it's a regional thing?
I washed all mine and used fabric conditioner. Some of them had a smell about them, especially babygros and vests that were in plastic packaging.
I always washed mine, There was no baby-grows for my babies, I had loads of long cotton nightdresses and they were put in a copper of boiling Rinso suds along with dozens of terry toweling nappies. I can see now that washing line stretching right down the garden, them all blowing in the breeze. I felt proud to see them& I was only 23.
nope, never washed new items. Washed the buggers enough times when they were being worn, without resorting to making extra work washing stuff that's just come out the packaging.
I don't think I even took them out of the wrappers before putting them on the babies for the first time - didn't want to jinx anything!

I'm sure sis used to wash all new stuff
i washed all the little vest and babygros for no1. i didnt like thought of baby skin being in contact in clothes that had been sealed in plastic. i only did it for newborn stuff that would be close to his skin.
no2 got what she was given :)

and i would hope that if you were pregnant i would know long before you were washing baby clothes!!!!!!!

I might be just getting them ready lol
I was always told to wash new bath towels before they were used as they never seemed to dry you properly until after the first wash. Never new baby clothes though.
My boss washes everything - she doesn't have kids, but all her own clothes/bed clothes/ towels etc. And she makes you feel really clatty if you admit to not doing the same. Who's got time for that nonsense?
I wash everything that touches the skin, especially items for babies. I didn't like the thought of 'dirt' picked up from factories where the clothes were made (some maybe from abroad). Even now when I buy new clothes which will directly touch skin, I will wash them before wearing as the thought of the material being made in some sweatshop doesn't appeal to me. I think I may be a bit OCD........
I didn't at first but when Litle Tiggs developed eczema I was advised to wash before use so I did.
I have read , but don't know where , that as a lot of clothes for babies are made in the far east , they are sprayed with anti - mould stuff , before being containerised.
So would wash if It was my child. Bit like our imported fruit that is all sprayed to slow ripening .
Never did myself either... must be really clatty (love it Karenmac!) Why make more work when you have enough to do; baby will be just fine well mine were anyway and rarely get ill/ don't have exzema.
I always wash baby's clothes before he wears them - makes them softer and reassures me (you never know whose been pawing the clothes in the shop before you buy them)
I would certainly advise washing new baby vests as my young son suffered from a severe baby body rash and medical opinions could not find any reason for same but advised that his new cotton vests be washed first! hope this helps you good luck.
