My family & I are moving out of my house. Currently my mum & brother liv nearby in rented accommodation, separately.

My mum is 72 yrs old and on DSS. My brother had a serious car accident an year ago and is disabled.

Can i rent my house to my mum & brother via the council. I dont mind receiving less rent than the market rate. At least I will know that they are safe and together.

I don't believe that you can. You could contact the CAB or the local council to find out for sure.

Eddie is wrong. Whilst it is fine to rent a house to a relative, housing benefit cannot be paid in these circumstances - and I presume this is what you men when you say your Mum is 'on DSS'. So yes you can rent the house to them, but the Council will no longer pay their rent.

bushbaby...please dont give this sort of advice unless you are sure it is true...its is misleading...no adult is just expected to house their adult family free of charge - so i dont know where you have got this idea from...why should someone lose out on rental income merely necause th tennants happen to be related?

i rent a house from my father...the housing know full well he is my dad and have never even questioned me abouit let alone had a problem with it.

dale - i know you can do this, but my dad is a landlord of other properties too...there may be something like that you would have to look into - prehaps having to register as a landlord or something.

In that case I apologise, I am basing my advice on what I was told when I worked in a Council housing department, namely that if a property was rented to a close family member then benefits would not be payable on it. Either the rules have changed or the policy was being incorrectly implemented where I worked. For questions such as this I do only answer with facts rather than opinions but am grateful to be corrected where wrong.
