Naming our baby

Hi, this is possibly a very silly question to post..........but what the heck..............

We can't decide which name to pick for our daughter (due in a few months).

Which is nicer - Mia or Elizabeth or Isobel??

I like both Mia and Elizabeth, not so much Isobel.

Maybe Elizabeth would be better, as you can shorten it (or not!) in lots of different ways?

But then, Mia is quite cute too... If your surname is at least two syllables it would be nice, as I don't much like short first name/last name combinations.

You have to consider that Mia can't really be shortened. Elizabeth would get called things like Liz, Lizzie, Beth, Libby or other and Isobel would probably be shortened to Izzy.

Personally i like Mia with Isobel in second place.

i knew a Mia, and beleive me if people cant shorten your name they will lengthen it she was known as Mee Mee's,
Isobel (bell, or bella) couldnt you use a cmbination like : Mia-Beth ........or Bella-Mia (no forget that one......sounds like a Pizza lol

mia is cuter, elizabeth and isobel are old fashioned and outdated! + they can both be shortened which i personally dont like. when i think of mia it reminds me of the film princess diaries, where the girl becomes a sweet gorgeous princess. mia gives off good vibes!! hope that helps

Isobel very often gets changed to Izzy (so it depends if you would like that i.e. her friends would probably call her this)

I have heard that as soon as they see their baby some people get a name in their heads which just feels right!

I like Isobel, but as your surname begins with L it might be a bit awkward (say the names together, you might get my meaning!)

The other names are lovely too ~ Mia Elizabeth is nice :o)

I agree with Morrisette87. Mia is a gorgeous , popular name wheras Elizabeth and Isobel are rather outdated. Fine if you don't mind a Lizzie , Betty or Izzy but I think that for a newborn baby , Mia would be the one i'd plump for out of your three choices but ultimately , the decision is yours. All the best for when your new daughter arrives x

I love names like Betty, Daisy, Iris and Maggie..names like Shannon & Kylie are old hat nowadays, it seems.

I guess it all comes down to personal taste Pippa. Personally , I was never a lover of Shannon anyway. Nor Jordan , Kylie , Britney or other so called 'trendy' names. I do like some of the older names but I must admit that I couldn't see myself ever calling a newborn baby Isobel or Elizabeth. Just my personal choice though.

Our youngest daughter was to be a Sophie but when she was born , she didn't seem to suit that name and we ended up calling her Holly instead. Sometimes you can have a name picked for months but when baby puts in an appearance you can suddenly change your mind and all your months of carefully selecting a name for your child goes down the pan :- )

I have never been into those trendy names either..I am not keen on Isobel as I have an evil aunt with that name, but one of my daughters is called Harley Isabella ~ I guess Harley would be considered trendy, but there aren't many of them around! Isabella was my husbands grandmas name, so he chose it ~ and it has grown on me.

My eldest daugher as going to be named Rosie. When she came out she looked nothing like a Rosie should have looked like..lol. She remained unnamed for over a week while we decided on another one ;o)

I think Poppy is a beautiful name for a girl.Mia is gorgeous also.

All very nice, you have to think how it will sound on a 30, 40, 60, 80 year old, however cute it is now.

Personally, I'd go for Elizabeth ...

Isobel is ok, but say it with your surname, one ends with L, one starts with L ...it'll all sound like one word.

i agree with the earlier post - you have to wait and to meet them first. my son is Calum but until he popped out he was going to be Cameron. Somehow he just didn't look like a Cameron in real life. good luck with everything.

Names change though Naz and sometimes certain older names make a comeback , new ones are created and there are some names which are just timeless and will never go out of fashion , in a manner of speaking. Times change as do names and just because there are many Betty's who are pensioners just now , who's to say that this will be the case eighty years from now ? For example , Alfie is a popular boys name but I haven't heard many young boys actually using the name Alfred - though this is popular with men of a certain age.

Choosing the name of your child is one of the most important things you can do for your child because by doing so , you are effectively creating an identity for them and depending on your choice , you may be condemning them to a lifetime of ridicule. That's why a lot of parents agonise over choosing the right name for their child , something special which will suit them and will continue to do so throughout their adult life. I see nothing wrong with having chosen Holly for my own daughter as I feel that this is a pretty girlie name and I do not find the actress/singer Holly Valance to be an oddity. She suits it as an adult and presumably will continue to do so throughout her adult life. I chose Matthew for my son because I liked the meaning and I wanted a good traditional name for him. It all comes down to what you feel is appropriate for your child.

Incidentally , you also have to consider rhyming slang :

My daughter (15) really doesnt like her middle name which is Elizabeth (because so many people have used that name!).

Her first name is Katherine but everyone calls her Lilly which I love. This came about cos her older sister who was 2 months when Lilly was born couldnt say 'Katherine' so changed her name!! Even her teachers call her Lilly.

So, just goes to show, you can spend hours choosing a name, and then they completely change it!!

Dear me - I meant to put her sister was 22 months when she was born not 2!!!!!!!!

Also, my niece is called Isabelle but we all call her Izzy!
