How long should I spend in a sauna at one time?

Is it un-healthy to have saunas frequently?

Why dont you ask the people that run the sauna - i would say around 10mins. After all you wouldnt want to shrivel up.

I travel a lot and was actually referring to saunas in hotels - some of which do not employ full-time health and fitness staff.
I've heard 15 minutes is ok , there's a timer on the one at my gym. You shouldn't use it if you have high blood pressure, but you probably knew that..

Thanks - yeah I knew that :o)
Sarky!!!!

Not sarky at all. I was merely saying that I knew about not going in a sauna with a heart condition - nothing more, nothing less.

I lived in Germany for many years, where a lot of people go to the sauna regularly. The Germans are very much into preventative health care and going to the sauna is seen as a way to maintain a healthy body and good circulation (mind you, you have to jump into a very cold shower or swimming pool after it for the best results! Yikes!) On my doctor's recommendation, I used to go twice a week for a max. of 20 minutes. You need to build this up slowly though. Start with 10 minutes and gradually increase it as you feel. I wouldn't exceed 20 min. though. Ask your doctor for advice if you are unsure. I rarely had colds while living in Germany and in part I put that down to my regular visits to the sauna. Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks carakeel
We use a Sauna every day for around half an hour in the evenings. Build up to it gradually and if you have tiers use the lower ones first as they are much cooler, also drink plenty and never let yourself feel distressed to get to whatever "time" you've decided on, just get out when you first feel you've had enough, it should be relaxing and enjoyable. It's great for you and you'll notice the difference in your skin and general health if you Sauna regularly.

Thanks - very good and useful info. Keep on saunaing! :o)
I stay in the sauna until I start to feel like I want to get out. I think that's the best way.
