My daughter is going to be four months on the 10th and has progressed rapidly. I was wondering when I would be able to feed her the baby food like squash and carrots? She is able to roll over, hold her head up, sit up with help, stand up with help, and hold things in her hands. I'd like to be able to give her vegetables if she is ready.

Thank you,

Baby food mom!

Hi med only you will know if she is ready does her milk not satisfy her fully, i think its 4 months when they say to start weaning but it could have gone up to 6 months anyway i took no notice of what age and started my daughter at 4 months when i new she was ready. I would start her off on baby rice for a little while as this will get her use to the texture and you can mix it with her milk maybe once a day to start with and that still ensures she has her milk and then gradually introduce other foods made by yourself such as a bit of carrot/potatoe, as starting her on our food straight away might be a bit too much for her little tummy this is what i done anyway other people might have gone straight to fresh food. you can get a few varieties of baby rice now i then went on to get the dinners and puddings in the packet cant think what there called you just add water in them then i made up my own when she was more use to eating, hope this helped you

The guidance now is that you should start at 6 months (as childhood obesity is now a big prob etc), but every baby is different so just do it when you think she is ready. My son was about 4 months when I started, he was a big baby and started waking up every hour as he was hungry. Baby rice is best first, increase the amount every couple of days. I started with pear next as read that it is easily digestible and then moved onto sweet potato. Just cook, mush and put in ice cube trays in the freezer. Start with small amounts mixed with rice, then increase every few days.

Your health visitor should be able to advise as well, and if you have a Sure Start centre nearby, they have advice and sometimes have healthy eating/weaning classes.

I started my son around 4 months - he was a really hungry baby and was at one point putting on about a pound a week. He is now 11, and quite skinny for his age! I think it depends entirely on your baby - you will know when he is ready!
