The ingredients should say whether the egg content has been pasteurised - if so it is safe (as long as you store it correctly). I would imagine the only mayonnaise containing fresh eggs you could buy in a shop would be in the deli section, not in a jar, as it would keep for only a short period. If in doubt, check with your midwife!

ps always avoid mayo in a restaurant unless you can actually see it coming from the Hellmans jar!

Thanks kags, thats what someone else told me but I wasn't sure. I will be happy tonight eating my chips then!! :O)

I ate hellman's mayonnaise during both my pregnancies and was fine.

The do say to avoid ice creams from ice cream men like the Mr Whippy variety and McFlurry's..but you can buy soft scoop and ben and jerry's.

When i was pregnant the 2nd time i did eat 3 or 4 mcFlurry's tho :-O

:0 !! Don't talk about McFlurrys, mmmmmmm.I had a McDonalds milkshake the other day,I presume the same principles apply to that as soft ice cream though? Will I have to deprive myself for another seven months? :0(
all jarred mayo should be fine, its when the egg is unpasteurised so avoid home made. Just ask at restaurants they should tell you!!

hey ladies don't feel bad about mcflurrys. my midwife told me that the only reason why pregnant women can't eat whipped ice cream is because when it is from an ice cream van, the temperature of the whipped ice cream rises when the van is not in use (ie overnight) but mcflurry machines are always on so the ice cream isn't such a breading ground for bacteria. this has put me off ice cream vans for life!!!!! she also said that only home made mayo is a bit dodgey. so you should be ok with jars.
