While period dramas are not usually my cup of tea (though i do confess to having tremendously enjoyed the series 'Versaille') i found 'The Empress' to be quite watchable almost from the first few scenes.
Set in Austria, this first series (i'm sure there will be more) looks at the relationship between the Emperor Franz Joseph I and his wife, the very sassy Empress Elisabeth. Apparently the series takes quite a few liberties with historical fact, but i don't mind that 'cos i didn't know anything about what actually took place. I do know a bit more now because i Googled :-)
Like 'Versailles', there is lots of skullduggery afoot in the Emperor's palace - much of it coming from his own brother, Maximillian. Also like 'Versailles', the women are very easy on the eye and, just in case Sqad happens to read this, there are no lesbian or homosexual scenes, so far - i've watched 5 of the 6 episodes.
Anyone into this sort of drama would most likely enjoy 'The Empress'.

I finished watching it last night and it was really good but I felt left in limbo at the end. Hope another series comes along soon.

Interesting fact, Emperor Franz Joseph I's great-great aunt was Marie Antoinette.

Tigger, when i Googled for info, i did come across a piece that said the series ends in a cliffhanger. So, providing the 'numbers' are good, i would expect a 2nd series, particularly as there's still so much to tell about this particular period of Austrian history.

I watched the final episode of series 1 last night and i am even more convinced there will be a 2nd series. I know Netflix are a law unto themselves and have shelved some decent series in the past, but even they must know that we need to know what happens next?
Yep, pretty sure there will be another couple of seasons as........well if anyone has read up on her, you'd know hers is not a short story.

Forgot to mention that it's dubbed in English. I keep subtitles on for everything I watch now in case of inaudible content but found some of the subtitles really weird in The Empress. It didn't match what they were saying.
