We are the stage where our 11 month year old is trying to climb the stairs. I know stair gates are not very much money but a friend mentioned somewhere that provides them and fits them for free? Anyone heard of this? Did some googling and couldn't find anything and my friend couldn't remember where she read about it!

Could possibly be Sure Start, check if one in your area - also check on Freegle.
the teasco one is on offer just now, £15 instead of £25
sure start provide safety equipment for the home, but im not sure if you may need to be receiving benefits, but worth phoning them.

Why not just go out and buy one?
One possible scenario is that the OP has no money.
Why not read the small ads in local newspapers and shop windows then?
Good idea.

Thanks for all your comments, and yes we could buy one, but as with so many baby items, there are so many things you need and if we can be resourceful and hire one or get one for free, we could put money towards other things. We have just moved house so as you can imagine there is always lots of costs associated with that. We investigated the Sure Start option but anneasquith is correct, you do need to be receiving benefits to get them for free.
Tried Freegle ??
