I'm not sure if it's all Brits. I never saw this phenomenon in Scotland.
It seems to be a thing that's dumped on you when you buy breakfast, I've never known anyone actually have them at home

Baked beans or Haricot Tomatose became popular in the late 1800's. Popularised by Queen Victoria's Photographer Sir Thomas ******** who first uttered the line 'Wake up to Beans'.and became a widely used phrase amongst the Oliver Twist type characters as they picked a pocket or two.

During the 1920's beans first appeared on breakfast menu's in the top resteraunts like Tiffany's and held a 36% share in the breakfast market and also 41% of the standard sized breakfast plate. Beans continued to be popular on breakfast plates all round Britain until the 50's when the fried mushroom became all the rage and beans moved down to a 18% of the breakfast market.

Beans for breakfast continue to be popular with them holding a massive 44% of all cooked breakfast plates.
