What would you charge your teenage daughter for renting an annexe to your house (equiv.to a small one-bed flat) or would it depend on income?

nothing if you can afford it ,i would not take money of my kids
Nice one sleepy. I wish you had been my parent when I was living at home. I'd still be there.

I paid rent when I was at home and earning, just to help out financially. I don't see it as being mean and nor do my 'kids', If they have finished education, are working full time ,I would have thought they would want to contribute to the family income and feel independent at the same time.We are talking about adults(18+) here.
approx 1/3 of their take home pay.
approx 1/3 of their take home pay.
Exactly. I think you will find that most teenagers pay some kind of board and lodgings.
I agree. I would say it is dependent on earnings. Maybe a quarter? A third is an oft-quoted figure though, maybe that's the going rate. I moved out at 17, so I never paid board. However, I quickly learned how much it costs to live, so I know funding somebody else to live isn't cheap. I am sure she will be using just as much food, elec, water etc. as you. Could you talk about a proportion of the bills? So she can see where it goes more explicitly. Of course, it might just be as easy to say 50/week.

Thank-you
Sleepyj was making me feel a bit guilty there!!!
All I wanted to know was what most people paid these days. It's a long time since I left my parents home and I can't remember how much I paid anyway, but I didn't think it was unusual or unfair at the time,I remember that.

depends on what shes earning and what she has to contribute towards herself. Is the annexe subject to its own council tax? has it got its own meters? has she her own kitchen and will she buy and cook her own food?
Question Author
no it's part of the house almost and it is self-contained so she can do all her own cooking but I provide food still and pay for utilities.(and do the washing etc.)I agree with you, i am legend, and most 1 bed flats and shared accomodation seem to be about 250 + per month
per person!
I wouldn't want her to feel she was paying over the odds but I would like her to show some respect,as you say.
i always had to pay a quarter of my wages to my mom. i hated it at the time but now i realise i had it easy back then. i think it is good for her to pay her way.
Charging some sort of rent helps them to grow into responsible adults.
If they accept that with their parents, then they will soon realise when they go out into the big world there is no such thing as a "Free Lunch"
sorry i just will not take money of my kids ..i know some people that take money but put it away for saving for the kid ...
sleepy, at what point would you even consider it? Jist asking, its your choice, but i know a guy of 38, earning 30k+ a year (in east anglia thats a heck of a lot) and still living rent free at home.

In fact an ex of mine was in a similar position, 39 and living rent free in an annexe.
You should charge your teenage daughter Ganesh. That's the problem with young people these days, they get what they want, when they want and have no concept of money or how hard it is to earn it, especially if their parents mollycoddle them, paying for everything.

As others have said, it probably depends on how much she earns, as to how much rent she pays you. I'd probably ask for 25%-30% of her monthly income, which would include her bills.
yes maybe a quarter of her wage, after all you still buy the food
In reply to your original question. would you be renting the flat out anyway? Then you would be looking for the market rent, perhaps daughter could find a friend to share if rent too high.
I,ve had three leave school and still at home, soon as they started earning I took a third. When my eldest girl got engaged at 24 she came back to live at home for a year or so as they were saving hard for a deposit. I didn't her for that time
Question Author
no,probably wouldn't rent it out, would let my son have it after my daughter had left home. Jut wondered what the current thoughts were on how much money to charge. Thanks for the input guys.
if you still do her food and clothes in the wash then its only fair to ask 200 month ..not as mutch as a one bed place as she is at home but enought for you to cover food elec and gas..as for you sleepyj ...for you not to take money of your kids you are being unfair to your kids....... kids nead to learn and stand on there own to feet..think about this your kids are so use to you askn for nothing when they move out they will no cope with in life ... i say dont make a profit from your kids just cover expences......and its lovely to have your child near by and safe.. but independent..well done ganesh ...so 200 month i would say
