Why are men stereotyped so often on TV as being useless? The taco advert with the bloke who gives his missus food poisoning, the More Than advert with the man who loses control of his car to a dog, the Vauxhall advert with the bloke smashing the vase "my mother gave us that"...etc.

He's having a baby. What sort of people watch this? Is everyone "partners" not "husbands & wives"? Are all these blokes really asexual new men? Are these people normal, or am I missing something?

I'm a woman and couldnt agree more Andy008, but to be honest I think it's just part of the whole dumbing down culture. Even the newscasters talk to us as if we are 12 (In between advertising Harry flippin' Potter films, since when was that news?)  Maybe men are just an easy target now because if they make out that woman are useless in any way, there would be a big outcry.
Yes everything does seem to be dumbing down. Look at ITV! Honestly i think my 6 year old would feel patronised by that channel.
You are right though if they made these programmes the other way round (especially that dog training one for men) there'd be a right old kerfuffle!.
I don't think men are necessarily stereotyped as being useless, I do agree there are lots of images that show that kind of view, but it's definately not the norm. There still a massive variety in images of men but different images of women are still thin on the ground. Yes there are lots of 'superwomen' type figures but then thers also still lots of dumb incompetant characters - like the Zoo and Nuts ads. Women aren't often portrayed as bank managers, university lecturers, entrepreneurs, blue collar workers, but often just mothers, wives, girlfriends or the now pretty common 'single girl about town' (or brigdet jones you could say).

It's because the only demographic that's fair game to everyone is White, Able-bodied, Heterosexual men.

No combination of any other group of people are fair game, the politicicly correct loons have made it so that we are the only ones you can take the p*ss out of without having a lawsuit on your hands. Anyone disagree? Open your eyes and look around!!

Totally agree marcoddy, it's ridiculous
Women are generally gorgeous or b*tches, it's not just men hon, but i agree with what you're saying.  My least favorite advert is where that horrible woman says "well make me another one and i'll let you know" - is that the taco advert? It's horrendous to the point of embarrassing, and puts the woman in a far worse light than the man.

Andy008 you are not missing a thing; the type of programme you give as an example is just one of the numerous pieces of garbage foisted on us in the name of entertainment along with any of the so-called "list" programmes or "reality" or "celebrity"or "makeover" shows. I dont know why we in this country tolerate the utter cr*p that the trendy left wing idiots at the BBC think we proles should watch.

ITV just follow the trends set by the BBC on the basis if it works for one it will work for all, then do it all to the death until everyone is sick of it. ITV has not had an original idea since the 70's.

I have virtually given up on terrestrial tv and use cable almost exclusively at least that way I have the choice.
