Although holidays are supposed to be relaxing times for us; sometimes the worst happens and one of our party sustains and injury. This is why it is vitally important to have good travel insurance before you set off. The medical and relocation bills can be exceedingly expensive. Now it seems that where you go can also make a difference to your bills new research has found.

Injuries sustained on holiday can cost up to 500 per cent more to treat depending on where you have chosen to go on holiday, travel insurance research has revealed. The research focused on the specific example of the cost of a broken leg suffered whilst skiing, as this is reportedly the most common injury to occur on the slopes.

A broken leg would set back the average holidaymaker £20,000 in the US (one of the most costly places to have an injury when you are uninsured) compared to £4,000 in France, says a leading travel insurance firm, who conducted the research.

Switzerland and Austria are some of the more expensive places in the EU to take a tumble, with care costs of £6,000 and £5,000 respectively.

The figures will act as a guide to how much insurance they may need while abroad, said spokesman for the firm.

"People want peace of mind when they're on holiday - they need to know that they'll be looked after in case of an accident," she said.

"If you do happen to break a leg or incur any other sort of injury, its stressful enough having to go to hospital, worry about your health and change all your holiday plans without having to think about the financial aspect of your injury."

With an increasing interest in winter sports people should remember to make sure their travel insurance policy covers all the activities they are planning.
