Duty is a tax that is paid on importing items from abroad.

Tax can be any form of tax ie Duty, VAT etc

If you are going outside the EU, then you can purchase Duty Free items - if you are within EU then you will not have any Duty to pay - though you will be paying tax (but in the country of origin)

I bet that has confused you as it has confused me :-}
