What does it mean when a company announces notification of major interest in shares. Does this mean someone had expressed an interest for the company ???

No, it's just a stock Exchange requirement.
If someone, or a company, owns 5% or more of another company, then this interest has to be declared as a major shareholder. Should the shareholding go over 30% then a formal offer has to be made for the remainder of the shares.
