I have tried applying for a credit card and giving only a mobile number and address for contact details. My application has been unsuccessful. Would I need to give a landline number as well to get my application accepted?

What did the card issuer say when you asked them...?
I would think there may be more reasons than that but I do know that companies like to see a landline number in an application as it shows a certain amount of credit acceptance.
I suggest that you might want to spend a couple of quid getting a credit report for yourself from one of the credit reference agencies (e.g. Experian). That will enable you to see the sort of data which is being assessed when the credit card companies look at your suitability for a card. If there is something there which needs correcting, you can then get it changed.
Not everyone has a landline these days but obviously that is one way that the credit people can check up that you are reliable at paying bills.

Thank you for that. I will try giving a landline number.

My credit report shows me as being on the electoral roll for 7 years. I have lived at my present address for nearly 13 years and have put that on the application form. Should I give the time at my current address as the one shown on the electoral roll?
No doubt if I am wrong somebody will correct me, but it is difficult to get a credit card if you have no credit history, i.e. if you don't already have a credit card.
IIRC you tend to need some kind of history of paying your bills...loan, untilities etcet.
