Well that's a failure of a scam.

Halifax sent me an email telling me that access to my online account with them has been suspended due to a mismatch of information and that I should follow a link to enter my details to fix this.

BUT I don't even have an account with halifax let alone an online one!

Yeah, but if they send out 2million of them they are bound to get a few people that do have halifax accounts.
Would you have clicked the link if you had an online Halifax account?
No bank would ever email and ask you to give details online like that.

remember this for the times when you get an email from the bank that you do use

No teak, especially considering the email address is clearly not of the banks and i know that they don't ask for info like that over the net. Plus if I did get a similar message from my bank, I'd try logging on first.
I had the same e-mail and as I have never banked with Halifax I left it in the junk folder where it was. My own bank never sends e-mails and if they did I would still direct them to junk. Sadly there are some people who will be fooled by it, no matter how many times you are told the warnings.
I usually just forward them to the bank involved
