I received an e-mail from PayPal this morning asking me to validate my account and password.

I've had my account for several years and don't recall ever receiving such an e-mail before.

I'm pretty sure I know what the answer will be, but is this a scam that I should ignore?

definitely iffy.

ignore it, or go to the paypal site (without clicking the link in the email), log in and see if you have any messages.. but I wouldn't even bother.
yes sara right it's definately spam, I get them all the time, same as the bank ones, just delete straight away

Thanks folks. I was 99.99% sure it was, but I just needed reassurance! :o)
asking for the password is usually the giveaway..
Any genuine emails from paypal (or any other financial institution you have an account with) will always address you by name, they never say 'dear customer' etc. They also never ask you to verify your account info by email.

Thanks guys
Was it addressed to you personally or did it just say something like " dear paypal customer"?

Dear Customer, I think. I've deleted now.

Good idea mdoo98 - I'll try that next time.
I disagree with the suggestion that you click on the link and then enter false details- by clicking on the link you are letting the phishers know they have a valid address and this may also be activating some sort of virus /keylogger.
Instead I believe that if you hover over the link without clicking on it the site address will appear while you hover- I think this is safe.
But in any event, if the email is simply addressed "Dear Customer" then it is certainly not from Paypal
