I'm a student and subscribed to a 12 month internet deal with wanadoo. I left the address in June after nine months there, and I cancelled the credit card they were using to bill me on (as I am now in France on a transfer year). I therefore owe them 3 months payment (60 quid). Would they ever be able to find me, put me on a blacklist etc? I'm intending to work in Investment Banking after uni and fear this might come back to haunt me in a year or two, if it could i'd rather just pay them the money than risk my employability.

It is surprisingly easy to find people. Try typing your own name into a search engine for starters. That is not even sophisticated. You leave a trail of informationo about yourself where ever you go, and whatever the Data Protection Act might say there are ways and means at laying ones hands on that information.
You should contact Wanadoo and tell them you would like to pay them. Otherwise this will end up as a negative rating on your credit file, and you don't want that at such a young age, before you have even got going!

The only way this will effect you is if Wanadoo actually go to court and get a judgement against you.

 

Wanadoo do not provide CAIS information (account info) to Experian or Equifax and so cannot show that you are in arrears / default.

 

I am unsure as to whether or not they will bother getting a judgement - if you are still in this country and are getting mail - if you do get a judgement against you, if you pay within 1 month you can have the judgement removed (but bear in mind there would be extra charges on their for debt enforcement)

From what you say, I think you will find that they will be continuing to take payments from your credit card account, and this will not just stop after 12 months. You will need to tell them to stop.

Just because you have "closed" the credit card account does not stop charges mounting up. Therefore you will have an outstanding, and rising, balance on the credit card, not with Wanadoo! For which you are liable. And you can be fairly sure that they will pass this information to the credit agencies.

I recommend that you do not just ignore this problem because it could get very expensive and damaging. You have signed an agreement to pay Wanadoo, which you need to cancel ASAP. And the credit card company will continue to pay them until you tell them to stop, or until they decide that you have scarpered without paying off the card balance. Either way, don't ignore it!

If the credit card account is completely closed then BenDToy is wrong to say that charges on that will keep rising. What is often the case is that your credit card company (if the account is still open) are unable to cancel the payments to the ISP, even if they set your card as being lost/stolen : the payments can continue despite this until you cancel the contract with Wannadoo.
BenDToy is right to say that Wannadoo may consider your contract to be ongoing until cancelled. In this case, you'll owe them more than �60 - they'll just have no immediate way of getting it form you.

Basically you agreed a contract with the ISP and you wouldn't be too chufffed if they didn't keep to their end of it (provide you with internet access) so it's only fair that you keep to yours. Wannadoo may be kind and allow you to cancel their contract after 9 months but this isn't something that you're entitled to. It's vital that you make sure it's cancelled after the 12 months.

I hope you do pay this (or have Wannadoo tell you that you don't need to) rather than ignore it as this definitely isn't the type of habit to develop in your line of work. Avoiding payment is more trouble than it's worth.

Bits of the above are right and wrong. If they continue to try and draw from your credit card you be charged for every rejection and every consequent letter they write to you. If Wanadoo can�t get the money they will �SELL� your debt to a debt recovery company. If they can�t find you they will employ an agent that can and that could quite easily add �400 (yes four hundred) to your bill. As for your credit history, a debt collection agency will give you approx 3 months before they issue a default and this WILL be registered at Equifax and Experien.
Just pay it!!
