a friend was having a new phone socket installed by an BT engineer, who happened to drill thru two electricity cables, leaving them live, despite numerous phone calls to BT, they say I have to pay the 1000 pound + get it fixed and they would refund me, I cannot afford 1000+ but feel that I will have to borrow it, even tho i feel that BT should pay up to have it done seeing as it was their engineer that caused the fault. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why would you need to pay 1000+ for a mistake that BT made whilst installing a friends phone socket????
That's what i thought cc where do you come into it? Are you responsible for what happens in your friends home?
BT are responsible, as it was their engineer. They have insurance to cover their engineers for these type of mishaps. It will be covered under their Liability Insurance.

Get an estimate for the repairs and then send them a bill, if they fail to pay, simply take it to small claims court (very cheap) where you will likely get the costs plus interest and damages.
