Do married people own their own stuff?

In the UK, when people marry do they own their assets separately.? If a woman died and her husband had assets in his name-ie shares would it form part of her estate?

A married couple do own their own individual things unless held in a joint name/account. So if a man had �10,000 in his sole name bank account and he left his entire estate to his child, his wife would not be entitled to that money. If the wife died, the �10,000 would not go to her estate.
