There must be an official bankruptcy notice, which will give the name of the legal representative for the company. They contact them and register themselves as creditors. If they're lucky, once the firm is asset stripped, they get something back.
Presumably you know the name and address of the company, and if it is in England go to http://www.insolvency-service.co.uk/officemap.htm to locate the area Official Receiver who is dealing with the bankruptcy. Contact the area Official Receiver's office who will tell you how to register your friends claim so that they receive their share of the payout after the bankrupts assets have been liquidated (turned into money). If the bankrupt firm is in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland flick through the pages of the same link and you will find Official Receiver contact details for those countries, who will again tell you how to register your friends claim etc.
