Are notes issued by the above bank legal tender south of the border?

They are legal tender nowhere.

They are generally acceptable north of the border.

South of the border it's up to the shopkeeper - he can accept them or not as he wishes. If he does he can bank them as normal - though there's a possibility that his bank will charge him more to deposit them than normal cash.
They're in common use in Cumbria too, never think about it here and it seems strange to have the currency refused when I go further south.

Thanks v much. A friend visited Fife and brought me back a Haggis and repaid a small debt ...with 'foreign' notes.

Scroll down this page from the Bank of England website which tells you that no, Scottish and Northern Irish notes are not legal tender in England (as dzug says though, to complicate matters they are technically not even legal in Scotland - though generally accepted there!).

There should be absolutely no problem exchanging them at your bank though.
