I bought a sofa and the payments started being taken once it was delivered in March 2004. It was a 3 year plan so is due to end this March. Will they stop automatically or will I need to cancel the payment myself?

Assuming it's being paid by direct debit, they should stop. However mistakes are rare though not unknown, and it may be safer to cancel the authority with the bank. Make sure you calculate the number of payments correctly!
yes stop it yourself! These sofa sellers are the biggest con men on the high street, I wouldn't put it past them to try and take another payment hoping you won't notice.
after the lASt payment, fing the finance company to make sure it's clear, then cancel it yourself
