Does a union (UNISON in particular) help you bring an action to sue someone if it is work related (as in all legal costs), or do they just defend you if needed?

Probably best to give the Union a ring itself.
Probably, but you need to ask them. Some certainly will, maybe not all. They will only take it on if they believe it has a good chance of success. They will try to negotiate a settlement without suing first.
