When I was a youngster, the slang for five shillings was a "dollar". As five shillings was a quarter of a pound, was there ever a period when conversion rates were 4 dollars to a pound ?

If that didn't work ...Here's the text.

In the year 1940, it took 0.26 British Pound to buy one U.S. Dollar.

The table presents for each year the price of the U.S. Dollar in the currency of United Kingdom.
The currency of United Kingdom is British Pounds ?.

year rate
1940 ? 0.26
1941 ? 0.25
1942 ? 0.25
1943 ? 0.25
1944 ? 0.25
1945 ? 0.25

Yes and Half a Dollar was Half a Crown (8 to a Pound). If you saw one of those as a child you were very fortunate in the 1940's the World seemed to run on sixpences (two and half p) and prices were carved in stone.
