How do I find out about all my policies?

Over the years I have accumulated various pensions,investments etc.Do you know of a good way to rationalise these?

Collect all your paperwork and sort into relevant files/folders, e.g. pension, insurance, bank a/c, mortgage etc.


Check to see how many are still valid/in force - see if you are owed anything on mature policies.


Next bit might depend on age. If you are at or approaching pensionable age, you might want to move stock market investments into gilts/cash.


If you have several (small) pension policies with different providers, it may well make sense to aggregate them with one provider. For this it will also make sense to consult an independent financial adviser - I would recommend a fee-based adviser as you seem to need exectution only help and probably don't want to take out new commission-paying policies. The more work you do in advance of seeing the IFA - clearly organising/labelling your paperwork, determining what you want to achieve, the quicker and easier and cheaper the meeting(s) will be.


I could go on but - in short, get organised and take competent, fee-based advice.
